Duncan's University of Twitter: More Data

My friend Duncan has just posted an article about universities that tweet. But just because you tweet doesn't mean you have anything interesting to say. It's difficult to assess this obviously, but I thought I'd have a quick look at how many followers each had.

Rather unsurprisingly, with their international reputations Cambridge and Oxford top the list with 6199 and 5998 followers.

Good stuff from Sheffield, 3635 followers is much higher than similarly ranked places. I'm off there soon. UCL though, what are you up to? Ranked fourth in the World and sixth in the UK (eh?), but only 1248 followers? Queen's University Belfast only has 303 followers. Ten times more than myself, but fewer than Duncan.

Of course all this should be compared to somewhere like Harvard which has 13076 followers, or someone like the fluffy and moist Stephen Fry who has more than 1.5 million.

  1. Hi Paul, interesting rankings. That twitter paper from the WWW2010 conference reckons that the number of twitter followers corresponds closely with the PageRank... Can you tell the bods in Manchester to pull their finger out?
